the catholic faith vs. gay marriage

Fri Dec 9, 2005, 3:41 AM
I am sure that every one has an opinion on gay marriage, and I am no different.

This is a widely controversial topic in America even though many other countries have

embraced the idea. I firmly believe in gay marriage as a right and think that we the

American people and the people of the catholic faith can not pass judgment on the act

itself. In the next paragraph I will speak a bit about the bible.

My first reason for believing in gay marriage is the same reason that many

historians of faith detest it. The Bible is my main reason. In the passage of

Sodom and Gomorra (verse 19-1 Genesis) states that two of gods’ angels came to the

town and went to spend the night in the town square. A man of the town approached them

he, beseeched them not to stay the night outside and brought them in to his house. Late

that night all the men in the town old and young big and small met in front of the mans

house and called to him ‘send out the men who reside with in for we wish to have carnal

pleasures with them’ ‘please my brothers’ the man calls out ‘ I have two virginal

daughters take them Instead’ the men reply by calling him traitor and trying to push in to

the house. This is where most historians say that god is saying that homosexuality is a

sin. If this text was written today I would believe that god was also saying that

homosexuality was evil but if you look at the time period it is also presumable that the

author was speaking of rape. At that point in time if the two girls where to have been

taken, it would not have been considered rape, because their father had offered them to

the men, at that time they could not consent for themselves their father made all of their

choices. On the other hand no matter how you look at it at the time that this was written

homosexuality was not a concept two men together was considered rape no matter what.

So since this particular passage was originally written by human hands and was

continuously written and rewritten from age to age and from language to language it is a

fair assumption that they could have been in fact been talking about rape.

If you are not a religious person this next fact might interest you. Homosexuality

is caused by a brain function. It is totally natural just like the fact that during your teens

and twenties your sex drive is considerably more active then at any other part of your life.

It is not a disease mental or physical; it was taken off the list of mental health issues in

the early twentieth century. Scientists have been studying the habits of the brain of

homosexuals and they are normal other then the fact that they are attracted to the same

sex.

Lastly I believe that one of the major issues is the way most of the Vatican and

the American people grew up. Even when my mother was a kid most of the Homosexuals

at her school were persecuted and hazed. The American and largely world wide view at

the time was any thing that was not “normal” could be cured, or obliterated. In some

countries they went as far as to imprison Homosexuals or even kill them. And while the

Homosexuals of today have most of the same rights as Heterosexual people,

Homosexuals are still being denied a basic right, the right to marry. Now some Catholics

say that marriage is a right between a woman and a man and that is how it has always

been, but I do not think it is our right to judge as a people, I think we should let god

decide whether or not these peoples marriages are holy in his name or not. And that is

what the Vatican preaches is it not that we can not judge other mortals for only god has

that right. In the words of out lord, he with out sin cast the first stone.

In conclusion I think that marriage is a right that should be given to everyone who

is serious in their attempt to further their relationship. Further more I think that the long

term effect would be well worth the little trouble changing the law would bring, it would

prove that we as a people keep our word and really do believe it when we say that this is

a free country, and as for the faith side it would prove that we really do believe that only

god can judge man.
